Description:
Fire Hydrant Equipment is a vital part of every fire protection system,
providing firefighters with a reliable source of water during emergencies. This
equipment includes hydrant valves, hoses, nozzles, couplings, and accessories
designed to deliver high-pressure water to control and extinguish fires.
Strategically installed around buildings, factories, and industrial sites,
hydrant systems ensure rapid access to water, reduce fire damage, and safeguard
lives and property.
As one of the oldest yet most
effective fire-fighting solutions, a well-designed and properly installed
hydrant system forms the backbone of the entire fire protection network. These
systems consist of heavy-duty aboveground and underground piping with external
hydrant valves placed at strategic points. Fire hydrants are pipes connected to
a water line, controlled by valves, allowing water to be discharged to
extinguish fires.
Hydrant systems are designed to
operate even under extreme conditions, including partial structural collapse.
They are suitable for all classes of fire risks and are recognized by standards
and guidelines from NBC, NFPA, TAC, IS, FM, and local fire authorities.
Types of Fire Hydrants:
- Wet Barrel Hydrant
– Contains a constant water supply.
- Dry Barrel Hydrant
– Requires a valve release to let water in.
Types of Fire Hydrant Equipment:
- Hydrant Valves – Control water flow.
- Fire Hoses – Flexible pipes to deliver water.
- Hose Reels – Neatly store hoses for quick use.
- Nozzles – Control and direct water streams.
- Hose Couplings – Connect hoses or hydrants.
- Standpipes – Supply water vertically in tall buildings.
- Adapters & Fittings – Ensure system compatibility.
- Landing Valves – Provide outlets on each floor in
high-rise buildings.
Other Key Components:
- Firefighting Pumps & Accessories
- Piping and Panels
- Branch Pipes & Nozzles
- Fire Brigade Connections
- Wiring & Instrumentation
- Maintenance Valves
Operational Information:
A fire hydrant system is directly connected to the water supply main through a
network of pipes. Water is discharged into the fire engine and then pumped to
the fire. Where water supply is unreliable, hydrant pumps are installed to
maintain pressure.
The pump station usually consists of
a Jockey Pump, Electric Driven Pump, and Standby Diesel Pump. The system
is kept pressurized with water at all times. When minor pressure drops occur,
the jockey pump automatically starts to maintain pressure. For major water
demand, the main electric pump operates, and in case of power failure, the
standby diesel pump takes over. This ensures uninterrupted operation during
fire emergencies.
